Clarence James Biography

Contemporary American artist Clarence James (b. 1991, Stamford, Connecticut) is a self-taught painter whose work explores identity, truth, self-expression, and cultural memory. After graduating from Howard University in 2014, he developed his practice through street art, murals, exhibitions, and creative projects across Washington, D.C., New York, Los Angeles, and Miami.

Through bold colour, expressive linework, and layered mixed media techniques. James combines abstraction and figuration with influences from Neo Expressionism, Surrealism, Cubism, and street art.

His paintings often incorporate acrylic, spray paint, oil stick, and graphic markings, creating energetic compositions that explore the relationship between the individual, society, and the subconscious. His distinctive visual language continues to draw attention through exhibitions, public murals, and collaborations, establishing him as an emerging voice in contemporary American art.
