David Hart Original

Exposure - 8 Black Dogs - Acrylic

Renowned Australian artist David Hart was born and raised in Broken Hill, where he first discovered his passion for painting while working alongside his father, the late Pro Hart (M.B.E.). Beginning his artistic journey at just 16, David has built a distinguished 35-year career, earning international recognition and becoming one of Australia’s most highly collected artists.

The iconic black dog that you will see in many of David’s outback works depicts Bogart, his childhood pet. In this sensational series, Bogart lives on as the feature character and will usually make several appearances across each artwork, giving the impression he is still on a search for David. Finding Bogart amongst the paint, however, is not an easy task.

Usually, the Black Dog paintings are created with David's bright colours (called Bogart), but here's a twist with this work, it is a combination of David's contemporary "Exposure" paintings and his "Black Dog" paintings.  This work has the same thick texture and loads of paint like a Bogart painting but created with the modern monochrome colours of black, white and silver.  And of course the hidden 8 black dogs.

About the Artist

David Hart

David Hart, born in 1971 in the outback mining town of Broken Hill, NSW, is the son of the late Pro Hart—an iconic Australian artist and miner. Immersed in creativity from an early age, David grew up surrounded by art, often working side-by-side with his father in one of the many studios on the family property. Under Pro’s quiet mentorship, David explored painting, sculpting, enamelling, casting, and welding—learning through exposure, experimentation, and self-discovery rather than formal training.

At the age of sixteen, David completed his first series of paintings, marking the beginning of a full-time artistic career that now spans over 35 years. Today, he is recognised as one of Australia’s most collected and celebrated contemporary artists.
