John Olsen, an Australian artist (b. 1928), has enjoyed a remarkable 70-year career, during which his expressive vision, shaped by the Australian landscape, expanded to include spirited explorations of wildlife, most notably during his travels to Kenya in 1978.
This very rare edition of his Kenya Giraffes screen print on rag medium, captures the playful elegance of three honey toned giraffes, drawn from lively sketches made on site. Olsen’s signature fluid lines, inspired by Chinese calligraphic strokes, and the balanced use of empty space convey both motion and a deep sense of harmony between the animals and their natural setting.
Through bold experimentation with line, form, and negative space, Olsen transforms a simple wildlife study into an energetic abstraction, bridging the vibrancy of African fauna with the poetic spirit that defines his Australian landscapes.
