Gloria Petyarre (1945–2021), a celebrated artist from Utopia in the Northern Territory, gained international acclaim for her iconic Leaves series. Inspired by the bush medicine leaves of the Kurrajong tree, these works reflect movement, healing, and ancestral knowledge. With flowing brushstrokes and layered colour, Gloria created a visual rhythm that evokes leaves caught in the wind.
In her iconic painting Medicine Leaves, Petyarre evokes the swirling leaves of the Kurrajong bush, a native plant traditionally harvested by women of her community for its healing properties. Through rhythmic, sweeping brushstrokes and layered patterns, the canvas seems to breathe: each dash and curve mimicking the desert wind rustling through leaves. This abstraction not only celebrates the natural world but also honors the spiritual and medicinal significance of the bush medicine tradition.
Gloria’s bold reinterpretation of traditional lore, transforming an ancestral practice into contemporary abstraction, earned her national recognition. In 1999 she became the first Indigenous Australian artist to win the prestigious Wynne Prize for landscape painting, cementing her legacy as a pioneer of modern Indigenous art.
