Seven Sisters Dreaming

Seven Sisters Dreaming

Sandra Ken Original

Seven Sisters Dreaming - Acrylic on Canvas

Celebrated Pitjantjatjara artist Sandra Ken (b. 1968, Amata, SA) emerged from the Tjala Arts community in the APY Lands. The daughter of respected cultural leaders Mick Wikilyiri and Paniny Mick, Sandra began painting in the craft room at the Tjurma Homelands Arts Centre before developing her own voice in her mid-2000s career.

In her powerful work Seven Sisters Dreaming (Kungkarangkalpa Tjukurpa), Sandra employs acrylic on linen to illustrate the ancestral story of the Seven Sisters, women pursued by an older man, using rhythmic dotwork and expansive aerial imagery to trace their flight across land and sky. Executed in 2020–22, her composition features honey-ant motifs and ceremonial lines, connecting country, kin, and cosmology.

Through bold experimentation with colour, pattern, and tradition, Sandra transforms a sacred Dreaming narrative into a visually stunning abstract masterpiece. Her work, both solo and collaborative, has garnered critical acclaim (including a 2016 Wynne Prize with her sisters) and is held in major collections such as the National Gallery of Australia, Artbank, and the Art Gallery of NSW.

I recently sold a Pro Hart painting on and They handled all aspects of the sale including transport of the painting from my home, located outside Queensland, to the buyer. The service they provided was exemplary. Very professional service. Highly recommended.

Pam McEvoy

I sold my Pro Hart from my home in Europe after owning it for well over 30 years. I was quite cautious about such a long distance arrangement but the gallery was very effective and friendly. Christine offered personal and professional service and guidance. I am also happy that it could be returned to Australia and handled by the Hart family.- the best solution really. Happy to recommend!

Secutary Ihtan

A big shout out of thanks and appreciation to Christine and the team who advised us well as we prepared to sell a Pro Hart original: their expert advice, followed trustingly, was rewarded with a prompt sale at a reasonable price.

About the Artist

Sandra Ken

Sandra Ken is most recognised for her depictions of ‘Seven Sisters Dreaming’ which is a story about family protecting and teaching one another other. It tells of the women being chased by an ancestral man who is in love with them. To escape, the sisters ascend into the sky as stars and the ancestral man remains, still chasing the love of the seven sisters today.

Sandra is an incredible artist in her own right but is also recognised and highly regarded for her contribution in the collaborative work that she created along with her sisters Tjungkara Ken, Yaritji Young, Freda Brady and Maringka Tunkin famously known as the “Ken Sisters”, that won the prestigious 2016 Art Gallery of NSW Wynne Prize.
