Leonard French (1928–2017), a renowned Australian artist, was born in Brunswick, Victoria, and rose from a signwriting apprenticeship to become one of Australia's most celebrated painters and stained glass artists. Encouraged by sculptor Victor Greenhalgh while studying at Melbourne Technical College, French developed a distinctive artistic vision that combined technical precision with bold creativity. His career spanned more than six decades, earning international recognition and major honours, including the Sulman Prize, two Blake Prizes, an OBE, and more than 40 solo exhibitions.
Through bold experimentation with colour, symbolism, and innovative materials, French created luminous works inspired by mythology, religion, and the natural world. Best known for his monumental stained glass masterpieces, including the iconic ceiling of the Great Hall at the National Gallery of Victoria and the dazzling windows of the National Library of Australia, he combined rich enamel, gold leaf, and vibrant glass to produce works of extraordinary scale, light, and spiritual depth. His expressive use of pattern, texture, and radiant colour continues to captivate audiences, securing his legacy as one of Australia's most influential modern artists.
