Sir Sidney Nolan Original

Untitled  - Oil Painting

Sir Sidney Robert Nolan (1917  - 1992) stands among Australia's most influential 20th century artists. Educated at Melbourne’s National Gallery School and closely associated with the avant-garde Heide Circle, Nolan reshaped the nation's artistic identity through mythic narratives, bold abstraction, and experimentation.

Through bold experimentation with materials and technique, Nolan became best known for his iconic depictions of Australian history and landscape. His practice spanned painting, drawing, printmaking, and stage design, often using unconventional mediums to achieve fluidity and expressive immediacy.

Nolan's fearless mixing of media, cultural themes, and abstract expressionism vaulted him to national and international prominence; his works are held in all major Australian collections and continue to influence generations of artists.

With an international career that saw him live and exhibit widely in Europe while continuing to explore Australian themes, Nolan achieved global recognition. Knighted in 1981 and awarded the Order of Merit, his works are held in major institutions worldwide, cementing his legacy as a pioneer who transformed the visual language of Australian art.

I sold my Pro Hart from my home in Europe after owning it for well over 30 years. I was quite cautious about such a long distance arrangement but the gallery was very effective and friendly. Christine offered personal and professional service and guidance. I am also happy that it could be returned to Australia and handled by the Hart family.- the best solution really. Happy to recommend!

About the Artist

Sydney Nolan

Sidney Nolan is celebrated as one of Australia’s most influential modernist painters. Born in Melbourne in 1917, he transcended his working-class roots, his father was a tram driver to reshape Australia’s visual storytelling through deeply symbolic and mythic narratives.

Nolan gained widespread renown with his iconic Ned Kelly series, boldly portraying the outlaw through stark forms and brooding landscapes, works that fused historical legend with modern expression.

In 1965, Nolan traveled to New Guinea, allowing its vibrant landscapes and cultural richness to inspire a striking body of work, notably the painting New Guinea (oil on canvas), which merges ceremonial figures and tropical environs into an evocative, abstract composition.

His career was marked by relentless innovation, spanning painting, mural, illustration, and set design. He received major accolades, including knighthood, the Order of Australia, and membership in the Royal Academy. His works now feature prominently in national and international collections, solidifying his legacy as a master of Australian art.
