Sir Sidney Robert Nolan (1917 - 1992) stands among Australia's most influential 20th century artists. Educated at Melbourne’s National Gallery School and closely associated with the avant-garde Heide Circle, Nolan reshaped the nation's artistic identity through mythic narratives, bold abstraction, and experimentation.
Through bold experimentation with materials and technique, Nolan became best known for his iconic depictions of Australian history and landscape. His practice spanned painting, drawing, printmaking, and stage design, often using unconventional mediums to achieve fluidity and expressive immediacy.
