WaterBirds - Oil Painting

Pro Hart, born Kevin Charles Hart in 1928 in Broken Hill, NSW, was a self-taught Australian artist renowned for his vivid and imaginative depictions of outback and rural life. Often referred to as the "father of the Australian Outback painting movement," he developed a distinctive style using bold techniques and inventive methods. His work, rich in character and storytelling, struck a deep chord with everyday Australians and earned him widespread acclaim. In recognition of his contribution to the arts, he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 1976. Pro continued to live and work in Broken Hill until his passing in 2006.

The paintings in Pro's waterbirds series are reminiscent of his time growing up and exploring the Darling River while on family trips. They capture the tranquility of the moment that exists despite the liveliness and movement within the piece. The contrast of the softness of the birds and water with the harshness of the bush landscape is truely breathtaking. Australian voice in the world of art.

About the Artist

Pro Hart

Pro Hart was discovered by Kym Bonython (Art Dealer) in 1962. Over his career, Pro’s popularity as an outback larrikin artist, saw career rise to fame and fortune as his artwork began to fill both private and corporate art collections around Australia and the world. Australian Pro Hart’s unique styles, and his exploration of new and expressive techniques, underpinned his work, and over a 50 year period, cemented him as one of Australia’s truly great artists.

Pro Hart was one of Australia’s most popular and controversial artists. Born Kevin Charles Hart in Broken Hill, NSW on 30 May 1928, his early years were spent on the family sheep property, “Larloona Station,” around 130 kms south east of Broken Hill near Menindee, NSW.
